In 2017, 42 of our community members died by suicide. The empty chair represents 1 more person who will die by suicide in the next 12 minutes in the U.S. The chair is worn out. You might say it’s burdened beyond repair and useless. Dr. Thomas Joiner’s Theory of Suicidal Behavior
Suicide doesn’t discriminate. It’s the 10th-leading cause of all deaths in the U.S. and the 2nd leading cause of death among ages 15-24 in Wisconsin. Middle-aged men are the most at risk. And yet, it is the most preventable kind of death.
As you see in the video, the person sitting in this chair reaches out and gets help out of the chair.
Suicide is the most preventable form of death.
If every person in our local communities of Brown County would recognize the signs of suicide and depression, and were given some resources to point them to, we would see that number decline dramatically. The good news is that every person can “be the light” to someone who is down and out. Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) Training is designed for just that: for you to be the light.
